Need help - any ideas?

Okay, so my sewing desk is a basic singer sewing table and my chair is a basic desk chair - not a nice cushy chair on wheels. If I had thought about it this morning and if my camera had working batteries, I would have taken a picture for you.

If I'm ever going to sew again I need to improve situation!

I am in so much back pain today after sewing every night/morning this week that I can barely move. It hurts to shuffle down the hall. I've been having back spasms for a couple of days now and stupid me, knowing it's the sewing desk/chair, keeps sewing!

So what suggestions does everyone have for making it more ergonomic?

  1. I use an old wooden desk chair when I'm sewing, but do have a chair pad on it to increase my height and add some extra padding to my already cushy bottom. Since you're fairly short you might also want to consider raising your foot pedal by putting something underneath it. And finally, making a small lumbar pillow for yourself would be a quick, inexpensive thing to do. Good luck! It's no fun to hurt through our passion.

  2. I had back issues too with my old chair, so I splurged on a good office chair from Ikea - $39. Well worth the expense when you consider how much time we spend at our machines!

  3. I use a pillow against my lower back... I would also suggest looking on Craigslist in your area for a more ergonomic chair. I see them all the time here for around $20 or less.

  4. I got a chair for my sewing room a couple years ago at Ikea and I really like it - a couple things that I like: 1)Wheels, and 2)no arms. Make sure when you're sewing that your arms are at a 90 degree angle, and that will help the ergo issues too.
